Benefits of Cryosurgery

February 13, 2017

Cryosurgery is a surgical technique that involves the use of extremely cold temperatures to remove or destroy unwanted tissue, usually with liquid nitrogen. Cryosurgery treatments are well established, and new applications of it are continuing to be developed.

Skin Cancer Treatment
Cryosurgery has been used extensively in the treatment of precancerous lesions and early stages of skin cancers. The main reason this treatment is so beneficial for these is the pinpoint accuracy of the instruments that are used. This allows skilled medical professionals to safely destroy abnormal growths in the skin before they can develop into major problems. Since the instruments can be used to aim the liquid nitrogen at highly accurate levels, there is a very minimal chance of damaging the surrounding tissue.

Removal of Warts
Cryosurgery has been used in the removal of warts for many years. It can be done in the comfort of our office, usually in just a matter of minutes. Wart removal with cryosurgery can be slightly uncomfortable at times. This depends on the size of the wart and how deeply the wart is rooted in the skin. However, the discomfort is usually so mild in nature that an anesthetic is usually not needed. There is little to no scarring when warts are removed with cryosurgery.

Various Skin Conditions
Extensive research has shown that cryosurgery can be used to treat a wide variety of skin conditions. The cold temperatures that are delivered via the liquid nitrogen can have a numbing effect, which can help with certain conditions.

One of the great things about cryosurgery is that minimal to no downtime is involved, depending on the situation. Patients need not take days and weeks off of work to heal from their procedure. While there may be some burning sensations and blistering for a few days, this is temporary and typically does not stop a person from resuming most of their normal activities.
