Blu-Light Treatment for Acne

January 23, 2017

Blu-Light treatment is part of a popular strategy to fight back against acne, and it can be very effective for eliminating the bacteria that cause acne. Since it’s a non-invasive treatment option, it’s preferred over many alternative acne treatments.

How Does Blu-Light Treatment Work?
The treatment uses a specific wavelength of blue light to activate a special medication. The effectiveness of this treatment is due to the targeting of certain bacteria within the skin. Since it has gained FDA approval, you can trust that it’s a safe treatment option. The bacteria that cause acne release porphyrins, which occur naturally within the body. Porphyrins are produced during a synthesis process that takes place inside of red blood cells.

After absorbing certain wavelengths of light, the porphyrins suffer free radical damage, and the bacteria is safely destroyed. Blu-Light treatment is very effective because it uses a narrow band of high-intensity light. The blue light source is absorbed easily by the porphyrins, and as a result, the bacteria is destroyed.

There are several other light therapies that are used to target acne, but they can cause damage to your skin. In the past, UVB light was used to blast the skin, but once the damaging effects of UVB were discovered, the use of UVB for treating acne was discontinued.

What to Expect from Blu-Light Treatment
A typical Blu-Light treatment is delivered in the comfort of our office with a special delivery system. Before the light source is used, a topical application will be applied to your skin, and it may take some time for the solution to work its magic. The severity of your acne will determine the number of treatments needed for optimal results.

Although everyone is different, you should notice a reduction in the quantity of papules and pustules on your face. Blu-Light treatment can be effective for reducing inflammation and improving the appearance of acne vulgaris.

How Does Blu-Light Treatment Heal Acne?
The main reason why these treatments work is because they kill the bacteria that cause acne. Although these treatments address the bacteria, they’re capable of reducing the other conditions that contribute to acne.
