What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the skin. It can develop on its own or along with another condition like diabetes or heart disease. The exact cause of the condition is unknown, but it is thought to have a genetic component.

There are five types of psoriasis. By far the most common form is plaque, in which the patient develops red lesions that look like a rash. This type affects over 80 percent of psoriasis patients. While the plaques can appear anywhere, they are most likely to develop on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.

In plaque psoriasis, the immune system causes the body to produce skin cells abnormally fast. Normal skin cells have a life cycle of about a month, during which they migrate from the dermis to the epidermis and are shed. In plaque psoriasis, the skin cells are pushed to the epidermis in three or four days. Since the body can’t get rid of them quickly enough, the dead skin cells pile up on each other and form red plaques.
