What is Levulan® and How is it Used in Blu-Light Treatment?

September 5, 2016

Most people go through a lot of work to keep their skin looking healthy. They make sure that they bathe frequently, they use a moisturizer and they try to avoid the sun. Unfortunately, it is all but impossible to completely avoid sun exposure. No matter how hard a person tries, there are still going to be times when they go outside without sunscreen on. Failure to protect oneself from the sun can result in sun damage that is so severe that a person may have pre-cancerous cells, or actinic keratoses.

When a skin condition gets to this point, there are a few options that people have to repair the damage. One of these options is to use Blu-Light treatment. This treatment capitalizes on the use of laser energy to reverse sun damage. It can also be used for individuals who are battling acne or who have rosacea.

In order for this treatment to be as effective as it can possibly be, the skin must first be coated with Levulan®. This medical product is designed to make the area of treatment more receptive or more sensitive to the light. Combining light treatment with Levulan® not only treats the diseased area, but it also helps to make the surrounding skin smoother and clear. In some cases, it can even help to prevent skin cancer.

The Blu-Light treatment itself is not uncomfortable. The best candidates for Blu-Light treatment with Levulan® are those who understand what the treatment can do and what its limitations are. They are also people who actually have a skin condition that can be treated with this treatment.

These treatments do not produce scarring in the vast majority of patients. While you may have to put up with some temporary side effects, such as minor redness, in the long term your skin condition will drastically improve with no permanent negative side effects.

Most people do a lot to protect their skin. This is because it is the largest and most important organ that we have. If you notice that your skin is developing unusual spots or if you are concerned about precancerous growths, you may want to look into Blu-Light treatment at Dr. Yeoman’s Dermatology Office. Most forms of insurance cover this procedure for the treatment of actinic keratoses. For your convenience, we have locations in Paragould and Poplar Bluff.
