Understanding Warts

Warts are typically small and rough growths that take on a similar color to the skin of the individual. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They can be either rough, flat or smooth. At the core of the wart, a tiny blood vessel grows, which serves as a means of supplying blood to the wart. In both common or plantar warts, these tiny blood vessels tend to appear as dark spots at the center of the wart.

What Causes Warts?

They are caused by the infection of a virus known as human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV infects and creates an impact on the top layer of the skin. It sets its course in the body through an area of broken skin. This virus uses the very top layer of the skin to grow in a short period of time. Most of the them tend to finish developing within months, but can also take years to fully mature.

Any part of the body that has broken skin can and is vulnerable to HPV, which makes the individual susceptible to developing this condition. There are several types of warts, with the most common being those that grow on hands. Other types of include the plantar-type wart, which are painful lumps that usually appear on the soles of the feet.
