Biopsies

What are Biopsies?

Biopsies are mostly done to diagnose for cancer. But it can also help identify other conditions. If an area of tissue is found to be abnormal in initial tests, a doctor will often label this abnormality as either a lesion, tumor or mass. Once this happens, a biopsy is recommended to examine things in greater detail by taking a sample tissue from the individual.

When Should I Consider A Biopsy?

A biopsy is usually considered when some of the following are present:

  • A mammogram shows a lump, showing the possibility of breast cancer.
  • A mole on the skin is of an unusual shape or melanoma is possible.
  • A patient is prone to chronic hepatitis, and it is extremely important to see if cirrhosis is present.

What Kind Of Biopsies Are There?

There are a number of biopsies specifically used depending on the details of initial analysis:

  • Bone Marrow Biopsy – This biopsy is recommended by doctors when cancer is suspected to have originated from or travelled to bone marrow. Bone marrow is a type of tissue found inside some of the larger bones, and produces blood cells. Analyzing its sample helps reveal what is causing the problem in blood.
  • Endoscopic Biopsy – In this procedure, a large, flexible tube is inserted into the individual’s body. A light on the end helps to see the inside of the body. Special instruments are attached to the tube to take small sample of the tissue that is to be analyzed. The tube can be inserted through the mouth, rectum, urinary tract, or via a small incision in the skin. It depends on where the tissue sample to be analyzed is to be taken from. Depending on the type of endoscopic biopsy you are going to undergo, sedative or anesthetic are applied before the treatment.
  • Needle Biopsy – After applying a type of anaesthesia, special needle is inserted to extract suspicious cells. These cells are then analyzed to reveal what is causing the problem. Needle biopsy is mostly recommended by doctors in cases of tumors that can be felt through your skin. Needle biopsy collects cells from the area that can’t be felt through the skin.
