Blu-U is a specific wavelength of light that activates a special medication called Levulan®. Levulan draws actinic keratosis, pre-cancerous growths, out of the skin. Blu-U has also been used for treating acne.
The Blu-U Levulan® treatment is covered by most forms of insurance for the treatment of actinic keratosis, but you should contact your insurance provider.
Currently, we are not aware of any insurance company offering coverage of Blu-U for the treatment of acne. If you would like to try Blu-U for the treatment of acne, you should ask your nurse or technician about your options.
If you are scheduling a Blu-Light treatment, you should be prepared to stay a while. Depending on the part of the body being treated, treatment can take 2-4 hours. The Blu-Light treatments work by allowing the Levulan® to sit on the skin for a period of time. The amount of time depends on how serious your actinic keratosis is and on which body part. If you are treating acne, it takes considerably less time. Plan to spend about 30 minutes with a Blu-Light specialist.
Bring a current list of all the medications you are taking. We recommend bringing a set of headphones or a book with you to pass the time while allowing the treatment to sit.
