Lumps and Bumps

Understanding Lumps and Bumps

Lumps and bumps appearing randomly can cause serious concern, as they can be signs of something serious. If given some time though, healing can occur and that means it’s nothing too serious. Typically, bumps and lumps aren’t to be worried for if they’re soft, malleable, and seem to get smaller over the course of time. In serious cases, lumps and bumps usually appear abruptly and tend to be large and robust.

What Causes Lumps and Bumps?

There are a number of skin conditions that can cause lumps and bumps to appear on either the surface or directly under the skin:

  • Skin Cysts
  • Cherry angioma
  • Keratoacanthoma
  • Keratosis pilaris
  • Lipomas
  • Neurofibromas
  • Dermatofibromas
  • Epidermoid Cysts
  • Folliculitis

Skin cysts are most common for lumps and bumps. They appear as small, closed pockets formed with tissue. They are usually filled with some sort of fluid, usually pus. Skin cysts are known to be noncancerous and benign. They can appear on any part of the skin and are shaped like a large pea. Skin cysts develop due to the clogging of sebaceous glands, around foreign materials, like earrings, or a certain infection. The cysts tend to show a pattern in growth and otherwise. They tend to grow slowly and cause no pain. They are smooth on the surface when touched or rolled under the skin.

If infected or inflamed, skin cysts require treatment to address their appearance and what causes it. In some cases, the cysts need to be drained out. The procedure might involve a scalpel, which is pierced into the cyst and it is drained out. This procedure does not cure the cyst or the condition. There are certain conditions, where the cysts are inflamed and these inflamed cysts can be treated with a powerful injection, filled typically with cortisone. This help the cyst shrink in size. If cysts persist in reappaearing, surgery is required to remove them completely.
