What causes Psoriasis

Psoriasis is not contagious like a cold or chickenpox is. So the good news is that you don’t have to worry about it affecting those around you. Although it is not contagious, scientists are still trying to determine what exactly causes psoriasis to manifest. As it stands, scientists attribute the development of psoriasis to two factors – the immune system and genes. When someone has psoriasis, there is something wrong in their immune system that is causing extra skin cells to pile up on the surface of the skin. And we know that psoriasis can also run in families and people can have genes that increase the risk of having psoriasis.

If you have psoriasis, it’s important to consult with a dermatologist to determine what sort of psoriasis
you have and what treatments are best in managing it.

Your treatment can consist of medication applied to the skin, light-based treatments and/or medication
that works across and throughout your body such as biologics.
